Scholarship Options

There are three different options available to help eligible families at Good Shepherd Day School. The first two, Florida Step Up and McKay Scholarships, are programs funded by the State of Florida. The third, The Good Shepherd Scholarship, is a fund established through private donations to our school. Please look through these guidelines and take note of deadlines. The applications for all three are available online. Please ask at the front desk if you need assistance completing the applications. Our goal is to help families attend Good Shepherd Day School, if that is the family’s choice for their children.

Step Up For Students

Florida Step Up for Students is a scholarship created by the Florida Legislature in 2001 to assure that low-income children have learning options. Under the law, the scholarships are based on financial need, not how well your child does in school. They are awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and can be transferred to other eligible schools if the student moves within the state, or simply wants to attend a different Step Up partner school.

Eligibility

To qualify for a scholarship:

1. A child entering kindergarten must be 5 on or before September 1st.

2. A child entering first grade must be 6 on or before September 1st

AND

Your household income is at or below the amount shown on the income guidelines chart below.

MacKay Scholarship

Florida's school choice programs ensure that no child will be left behind by allowing parents to choose the best educational setting—public or private—for their child. The McKay Scholarships for Students with Disabilities Program provided over 24,000 Florida students with special needs the opportunity to attend a participating private school. The McKay Scholarships Program also offers parents public school choice. A parent of an eligible special needs student may choose to transfer the student to another public school.

Eligibility Requirements

In order to be eligible for the McKay Scholarship Program, a student must apply for the program prior to withdrawing from public school. The student must also have an Individual Education Plan (IEP)* or 504 Accommodation Plan, and: Have been enrolled and reported for funding in a Florida public school during the preceding October and February Florida Education Finance Program surveys (Grades K-12); or Have been a pre-kindergarten student who was enrolled and reported for funding in a Florida public school during the preceding October and February Florida Education Finance Program surveys and was at least 4 years old; or

Have been a pre-kindergarten student who was reported as having received Specialized Instructional Services by the Office of Early Learning and was at least 4 years old; orHave attended the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind during the preceding October and  February student membership surveys (Grades K-12).

If your child does not meet these requirements but has an IEP or 504 Accommodation Plan and is a dependent child of a member of the United States Armed Forces who transfers to a school in Florida from out of state or from a foreign country pursuant to a parent’s permanent change of station orders, the child may be eligible for a McKay Scholarship. Please contact this office at 1-800-447-1636 for additional information.

* Please note that students with a "gifted only" designation and an Eligibility Plan (EP) do not meet the eligibility criteria for the McKay Scholarship Program.

Deadlines

Several Deadlines occur throughout the year, however, the earlier you file, the more scholarship money you will receive. Most parents file their intent to access a McKay Scholarship by July for the following academic year, however you can file by the subsequent deadlines in September, December, and January, and still be eligible to receive McKay funds.
